Was Hitler a Socialist Dictator?

hello again I'm Jackie Fox and this is Fox Fox today we're gonna be talking about oh man my nose has to start itching as soon as I turn this on today we're going to be talking about an argument that I've had way more than I ever expected to with in my life over these last couple of months it seems like there's a conscious effort from the right to blur the line on what Nazism actually is and there's a lot of people who are taking a really surface-level look at the Nazi Party and using that to determine that the Nazi Party was a far left Socialist Party I know that sounds completely ridiculous and that's why I'm here to debunk it as thoroughly as I can so I've gotten so sick of having this argument that I actually wrote a like four to five page essay on it and that's what I'm going to be reading from today there are several points within the essay mono yeah there we go need to be able to read it there's several points within the essay where I actually quote material I'm gonna be including links to the material that I'm using for sources in the description so if you're interested to know how I came to these ideas or what I'm quoting you can find that in the description so i i've made this argument enough times that i'm turning it into an essay and my conclusion is that the Nazi Party was far-right capitalists despite the name of the party so what I often run into is people say well it's the National Socialist German Workers Party that's what Nazi means they said they were socialists so obviously they're socialists but let's start this argument off by defining a few of the terms that we're going to be addressing here capitalism is an economic and political system in Winokur in which a country's Trade and Industry are controlled by private owners for profit rather than by the state socialism is a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates for the which advocates that the means of production distribution and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole authoritarian ISM is the enforcement or advocacy for strict obedience to Authority at the expense of personal freedom and fascism is a political philosophy movement or regime that exalts national and often race above the individual and stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader severe economic and social regimentation and forcible suppression of opposition so just to sum these definitions up we have state or public ownership is socialism privatization of Industry is capitalism excessive regulation is authoritarianism and ultra-nationalist authoritarianism is fascism so now that we have the basis for a discussion covered we can dive into the history Hitler tried to portray the party which was born from a capitalist party and initially marketed more as more socially liberal or even anti-capitalist in order to get some more socialist groups to come on board the Nazi Party emerged from the German nationalist racist and populist fray corpse paramilitary culture which fought against communist uprisings in post-world War one Germany the party was created to draw workers away from communism and into Volk psious nationalism initially the Nazi Party strategy focused on anti-big business anti bourgeois and anti-capitalist rhetoric although this was later downplayed to gain the support of business leaders and in the 1930s the party's main focus shifted to anti-semitism and anti-muslim according to historians the complicated moniker of the Nazi Party reveals more about the image the party wanted to project and the constituency that it aimed to build than it did about the Nazis true political goals which were building a state that was based on racial superiority and brute force governance Adolf Hitler the party's leader since 1921 was appointed Chancellor of the was appointed Chancellor of Germany by President Paul von Hindenburg in on January 30th of 1933 from there Hitler rapidly established a totalitarian regime the Nazi Party started small and with a lot of competition from other parties their branding was meant to subvert socialist parties and generate mass appeal not only because not because they believed in socialism after Hitler became Chancellor the party abandoned any connection to socialism but here's a more in-depth look at how that process worked over the years following the brother over the following years after the party was formed brothers Otto and Gregor Strasser did much to grow the party by tying Hitler's racist nationalism to socialist rhetoric that appeared to the suffering lower that appealed to the suffering lower middle classes in doing so the stressors also succeeded in expanding the Nazi reach beyond the traditional Bavarian base that it always had by the late 1920s however with the German economy now in freefall Hitler enlisted support from wealthy industrialists who sought a bowel who sought to pursue a validly anti socialist policies otto Strasser soon recognized that the Nazis were neither a party party of socialists nor a party of workers and in 1930 he broke away to form the anti-capitalist black front Gregor remate Gregor remained the head of the left wing of the Nazi Party but the lot for the ideological soul of the party had already been cast Hitler allied himself with leaders of German conservative and nationalist movements and in January of 1933 he was appointed Chancellor Hitler's Third Reich had now begun and it was entirely fascist in character within two mon Hitler achieved full dictatorial power through the enabling act in April of 1933 communists socialists Democrats and Jews were purged from German civil service and trade unions were outlawed the following month that July Hitler banned all political parties other than his own and prominent members of the Germany's German Communist Party and the Social Democratic Party were arrested and imprisoned in concentration camps lest there be any remaining questions about the political character of the Nazi revolution Hitler ordered the murder of Gregor Sasser an act that was carried out June 30th of 1934 during the night of Long Knives any remaining traces of socialist thought in the Nazi Party had then been extinguished so by 1934 they not only changed but they'd killed their former resident socialists after kicking all the socialists and Democrats out of the party but how did they control the economy maybe they did so like a socialist would by taking power from private owners and giving it to the state and/or the people the Great Depression had spurred increased state ownership in most Western capitalist countries including the United States this also took place in Germany during the last years of the Weimar Republic in the 1920s but fuck but after the Nazis took power industry was privatized in masse several banks shipyards railway lines shipping lines welfare organisations and even more were privatized however the privatization was applied within a framework of increasing control of the state over whole economy through regulation and political interference the Nazi government took the stance that enterprises should be in private hands whenever possible state ownership was to be avoided unless it was absolutely necessary for the rearmament or the war effort and even in those cases the right often insisted on the inclusion in the contract of an and the inclusion of a contract of an option according to which the private firm operating the plant was entitled to purchase it also if you were wondering what the term national socialism means and if that is socialist national socialism more commonly known as Nazism is the ideology and practices with the Nazi associated with the Nazi Party officially the National Socialist German Workers Party in Nazi Germany and of other far-right groups with similar aims Nazism is a form of fascism and showed the ideologies disdain for liberal democracy and parliamentary systems but also in Kurt but also incorporated fervent anti-semitism anti-communism scientific racism and eugenics into its Creed the party was renamed the National Socialist German Workers Party to attract workers away from left-wing parties such as the Social Democrats and the Communist Party Adolf Hitler assumed control and Adolf Hitler assumed control of the organization the National Socialist program were 25 points was adopted in 1920 by the party and called for a united Greater Germany that would deny citizenship to Jews or those of Jewish descent while supporting land reform and the nationalization of some industries in meine Kampf Hitler outlines the anti-semitism and anti-communism at the heart of his political philosophy as well as his disdain for representative democracy and his belief in Germany's right to territorial expansion for members of the Nazi Party in fact defending socialism on its own terms was a risky activity which could result in ejection from the party or far worse of party leader and dissenter Otto Strasser author William shy-shy were rights unfortunately for him he had taken seriously not only the word socialist but the word workers in the party's official name of National Socialist German Workers Party he had supported certain strikes of the socialist trade unions and demanded that the party come out for the nationalization of industry this of course was heresy to Hitler who accused Otto Strasser of professing the cardinal sins of democracy and liberalism on May 21st and 22nd of 1930 the Fuhrer had a showdown with his rebellious subordinate and demanded complete submission when Otto refused he was booted from the party so let's summarize in the early days Nazis co-opted socialism but not completely by the time Hitler assumed full control of the party as Chancellor it divorced itself from any level of socialism and took a hard turn for capitalism and totalitarianism under a philosophy known as fascism a considerably far-right movement while doing this they reprieve Atty 'he's much of the economy so in no way were they socialists after 1934 and before that they were basically only paying lip service to the ideology in socialism the means of production are controlled by the people and in some interpretations this means the state it stealth but it's still the state for the benefit of the people not the state for the benefit of the state itself or the people for the benefit of the state itself Thanks in socialism Oh instead of making Germany more socialist Nazism actually did the opposite and while the rest of the world was putting parts of their economy under state control Nazis actually made their country more privatized now at this point I could just rest on my laurels and point to the description of fascism as an inherently far-right movement but I'd rather explain exactly why their far-right – ass wage any remaining doubt first we should again define our terms I'm using the political compass by the way when referring to how these groups relate not only because it uses the traditional left-right spectrum but because it also uses a vertical axis to represent Authority arianism and liberalism as well so I'm sorry and libertarianism authoritarianism and libertarianism as well liberalism is a political doctrine that can be described as leftism and it takes protecting and enhancing the freedom of the individual to be the central policy the central problem of politics liberals typically believe that the government is necessary to protect individuals rights and from being harmed by others but they also recognize that the government in itself can pose a threat to Liberty although the terms left and right as used in American politics can be somewhat less than perspicuous they are helpful in delineating the basic ideological divide between liberalism and progressivism as embodied mainly by the Democratic Party on one side which is called the left and conservatism traditionalism as embodied by the Republican Party on the right seen as a spectrum or continuum of ideologies socialism communism typically falls on the far left end of this scale while nationalism and fascism fall on the far right the Nazi problem comes down to this as an ultra nationalist socially conservative anti-ag a latarian and fascist ideology Nazism naturally falls on the extreme far right of the social spectrum instead of focusing on a Galit arianism or equality as a leftist would they were described as anti egalitarian which should be clear in their quest for racial purity and the pursuit of genocide Nazism is described as having a disdain for liberal democracy and the parliamentary system and being ultra nationalist as well as socially conservative as opposed to being socially liberal fascism exalts the nation and race above the individual and it stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader which is directly at odds with the core tenants of liberalism such as protecting and enhancing the freedom of the individual and the recognition the government itself can pose a threat to tyranny so in four pages that is why the Nazi Party Nazi Germany and Hitler were decidedly not only not socialists but even in anti-socialist and often violently so and in addition to that they were far left in pretty much every way that you could define I mean they didn't believe in trade unions which were a big thing for the far left and communism and socialism they were anti egalitarian say didn't like equality I mean they were nationalists racist like how much more do I need to say to define far right / far left and yet because of the amazing power of the dunning-kruger effect and the cockiness of individuals who have done a little bit of surface-level research into the truth behind a situation taking incomplete information that they may have perhaps gleaned from a headline instead of by careful study they can often draw the wrong conclusion for any variety of reasons so this is the kind of thing that I'm going to be tackling over the rest of this course these times when looking at something from the surface level actually does human intense disservice and I'm gonna try to teach you as best I can exactly what certain arguments are just completely false and based on a ignorant misinterpretation of the facts so if you like this video if it taught you a couple of things that you can use for combating this argument yourself or if it just opened your eyes and informed you drop a like there's gonna be a patreon link down there at some point as well I would appreciate the ability to upgrade my equipment perhaps be able to edit my videos so that pauses and stuff like that can be worked out and graphics can be worked in but in the meantime this is how gonna roll but if you think that we can improve as a channel then you know hit up that patreon link send me a dollar a month any little bit helps if enough people do it and also subscribe to the channel search you don't miss any videos if this is the kind of content that you enjoy so until next time this was Fox talks and have a great day
