Thomas Jefferson and the Tyranny of Religion

gonna get back also does this whole
religion thing it’s its a I’m frankly very concerned I a
nationally when Supreme Court’s came out and so that’s just tradition you know
that the senate opens with a prayer what’s the big deal my first response was yeah I know what’s the big deal but once you start
breaking down the lines you know it’s the old to get the camel’s
nose in the air the edge in the tent better for i’m concerned. that and in fact I i think frankly we we
pass this way back during the bush senior
administration when bush junior negotiated deals actually was during the reagan the
second year the second rating Reagan’s second term and Bush junior was the layers on
between is daddy’s upcoming presidential campaign and the
fundamentalist Christian community and they started doing these Facebook faith-based initiatives that became
george bush seniors thousand points of light where it’s like basically let’s give
government money to religious groups and jerry falwell was there with his
hands out any became a multimillionaire in the process and pat robertson’s now a
billionaire and I mean you’ve got all these
religious guys got really really rich of the snow a lot it was government money and continues to be and now we’re giving
money to to to secular air to religious church
schools onto to give religious indoctrination in
education a kid’s and adjusted it’s going on on on gay
bigger and bigger and bigger and bill clinton continue to by the way and in fact expanded the program because
hey you know votes and then George W Bush
put on super steroids and Obama has inherited and hasn’t done
anything to stop it and so why I think that we have a problem here in this country and like I started
to say my in my a discussion with the bishop
Jefferson was constantly worried that that the priests were gonna get inside
the government in fact he you know the I I’ve told the story before but it is
so worth repeating I live about a 20-minute walk from the Jefferson Memorial I Louise I live on a in a boat a little
cabin no 1986 chris-craft cabin cruiser on the on the awash in channel in the wash in
channel the wash in channel dead ends into this pond in front of his pool in front of
the Jefferson Memorial and so on a nice weekend day-lewis I was
walk down there as jefferson Memorial you know and there and if you ever you know I ever make it to DC it’s
really worth going to see and there’s this little circular say no
Jefferson edged into the dome above this giant
fifteen foot statue of Thomas Jefferson in the middle memorial and it says and a sec wrong page it says I have sworn upon the altar of
God eternal hostility against every form of
tyranny up imposed upon the mind of man as all sets now you would think you know in and it’s
obviously a call from jefferson and you would think that basically what he’s
saying is I’m a bible thumping Christian and I’ve sworn in for on the altar of
God hostility against anything it’s gonna be a tyranny over the mind Zimmer
context is everything my friends let me read you
the actual letter from which that quote com its this was in 1800 Thomas Jefferson was vice
president at the states he was challenging John Adams to become
president Adams want to run for a second term Jefferson ran against him he was vice
president Jefferson beat him there’s a book coming out this fall
called the revolution is 1800 by Dan sisson and with a little help from me mostly
dancers and he’s a brilliant historian your love this book we will be talking
about a lot this fall and the revolution 1800 was the election
thomas jefferson so years here is this and so Ben Ben rush was a
good friend of jefferson’s he was a doctor position any was a deist he was not a
Christian E he he he was a DST believed that you
know something some incredible intelligence started it
all and establish the the laws of nature in
it major just been rolling along ever since then and so Jefferson a couple months before
the election just two months before the election 1800 so be like September have 1800 writes this note this letter
to ban rush and in it he asks am too hot let anybody
see this letter his letter didn’t come on till Jefferson
was dead and here it is remember the quote thats at the top of the Jefferson
Memorial I have sworn upon the altar up God eternal hostility against every
form of tyranny imposed upon the mind of man okay that’s the quote here is the letter dear sir I promised you a letter on
Christianity which I have not forgotten I do not know that it would reconcile
the genus irritable vadim which is Latin for the species have angry priests who are all in arms against me their hostility isn’t too interesting
aground to be softened the delusion on the clause of the
Constitution is talking about the first amendment the delusion on the clause in the
Constitution which while it secure the freedom of the press covered also the
freedom of religion has given to the clergy a very favorite
hope obtaining an establishment a particular
form of Christianity throughout the United States and as every sect believes its own form the one true one everyone perhaps hoped
for his own but especially the episcopalians in the
Congregationalists and then he turns to his been elected he refers to that is the returning but
since our country if he gets elected you concede the
referred to John Adams presidency is the time of
which is you’ll recall and he says the returning good sense a
far country threatens abortion to their hopes priests and the preacher’s believe that any
portion up power confided in me such as been elected president will be exerted
in opposition to their schemes and they believe
rightly for I have sworn upon the altar of God
eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the
mind of man but this is all they have to fear from
me and enough to in their opinion and a quote the context rather changes the quote is
it not I can’t tell you how many right-wingers
ago on the strong America is a Christian nation jumpings Christian he’s a swore
on my older brothers because tortillas turning over the binary the charity he
was talking about was religion he went on he was so this was in his
autobiography quoting from jefferson’s autobiographies
is where the preamble to the Virginia statute for religious freedom which is
by the way one of the three things on his tombstone
that he was most proud of that he was the author of that the creation of the University
Virginia and the Declaration of Independence
doesn’t even say that this guy was president I’m and now back to his autobiography is where the preamble to the Virginia
statute for religious freedom declares the coercion is a departure from the plan the Holy
author of our religion and a member was proposed by
inserting the word Jesus Christ so it should read a departure from the
plan to Jesus Christ the Holy author of our religion the insertion is a story about the
debate before the Virginia House of Burgesses and this is on the verge Virginia
resolution for religious liberty in other words the government should not interfere with
religion he said the insertion of Jesus Christ was rejected by a great majority
in proof that they meant to comprehend within the mantle up its protection the Virginia statute
for religious freedom with it within the man to love its
protection the Juno and the Gentile the Christian and the Mohammed TN the Hindu and the infidel up every denomination this is from his autobiography from
notes on Virginia it is legitimate powers to govern extender such actions
as only are are injurious to others it does
me no injury for my neighbors say there are twenty gods or no God neither picks my pocket a bright spot I could go on but I won’t I just want
them I it really concerns me when the Supreme
Court and the preacher resolve America are
conspiring together as as Jefferson site intrudes the
alliance between church and state in england has ever made their judges
accomplices in the frauds the clergy

Comments
  1. giving public money to religious schools in the form of vouchers is a clear violation
of the separation of church and state

  2. In a similar vein, the famous quote by Ben Franklin, “Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety”; in context means something quite different than how most people perceive it: http://www.lawfareblog.com/2011/07/what-ben-franklin-really-said/

  3. Those that don't support separation of church and state will change their tune when their religion is no longer the majority religion.

  4. Truth and facts have no meaning whatsoever to the leaders of America's Christian Taliban movement.  Their ultimate goal is total theocracy, and they will use any means necessary to impose what promises to be an excessively violent dictatorship.

  5. If Jefferson was talking of religion as a tyranny over the minds of humans, then we must ignore that quote. Because recent research in the cognitive and psychological sciences points to religion as being a consequential byproduct of certain inbuilt mental faculties.

Religion can't have tyranny over the human mind if it is emanating from the human mind. Because it is simply doing what the human mind has an inclination to do.

It is also worth noting that Jefferson was probably working from a definition of religion that was far from accurate, and instead more consistent with Protestant doctrine.

  6.  I think that tyrants by conviction are using religion as a form of manipulation and the achievement of power.  And tyranny by conviction is being confused with faith, and therefore religious and godly nature. A problem also found outside politics and religion, and maybe healed by the correct mix of check and balances for the corresponding time and society. Or not?

  7. Mr. Hartmann talks and talks without making a point. He tells cute little unrelated tales and gives travel advice. He assesses blame for a problem he fails to properly describe.and then makes broad statements about religious tyranny. He knows a lot about little details in history, but fails to grasp the arc. "Priests" have not taken over the government, so Jefferson was over-reacting. So is Mr. Hartmann. When people are this eager to slam religious belief it makes me wonder why. I am not religious, but I don't mind if other people are. Some of the believers I have met are not very good people, but most are. Some of the nonbelievers are not very good people, but most are. I have had times in my life where I wished I was a believer, but I just couldn't. I understand the need though, and I would not begrudge anyone a little peace of mind in an uncertain world If one were to suggest that Mr. Hartmann should relax and maybe tone down the rhetoric, he would probably respond with "eternal vigilance is the price for liberty," or some such, so I won't bother.

  8. It was politics that pushed is nose under the tent of religion and religious liberty. Not the other way around as it is commonly said today. The founding Fathers understood that when "we the people" ceased to be moral, tyranny would soon ensue. We are to be a collection of states held together by a common core of liberty and justice and freedom. A strong central or federal government was never the intention. We now have a government that is not one for the people but for greed and vain self interest up for sale to the highest bidder and serving only the need of the moment. The plumb line of the Constitution and the moral compass has been bent and we have a federal court that runs by opinion. The seeds of the injustice we are now reaping were sown long ago by a complacent electorate.

  9. I believe that when he said he was against the church that he is right because the govt. controls the physical power over the people and church the emotional power over the people thus if these where to unite, the govt. can write laws and the church can force you to submit to them ("or your against god"). then all the stupids that fell for it go to the voting booth and vote their rights away and the govt enforces.. that's my understanding of why these, if fused together, would be a devastating juggernaut that we will never escape from….Thank You..

  10. lets look at what has happened in the past say 30 years since secularism has slowly taken over. families falling apart. Drugs taking over our population. Sexually transmitted diseases running rapid. The denial of the truth [transgender& homosexuality] the infanticide of our un born children. All mandated by the left. tell me who is the tyrant now.

  11. you do have a problem, but so far, no one grasped that it all began with the constitution. that is the rock on which american society is built, and it is the foundation of oligarchy, in the control of wealth. the founders had no need for religious control, but their inheritors in the republican party do, so it is used.
it is in the interest of most politicians that the electorate be ignorant and frightened of the outside world, religion prospers here too. between them they have made americans into malleable chumps. nothing to be done about it, madison made a nation unresponsive to its people, out of the well-founded fear that democracy would lead to socialism, and the destruction of the rich with taxes. so it's revolution, or decay. decadence seems very likely.

  12. THOM HARTMANN TALKS FROM HIS F**KING ASS. THIS COUNTRY WAS FOUNDED ON BIBLICAL PRINCIPALS RIGHT DOWN TO THE CONSTITUTION. THOM HARTMANN IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO DEBATE ME IF THE CONSTITUTION IS BIBLICALLY BASED. I WILL PUT YOU BACK IN YOUR HOLE. SO PLEASE BE MY GUEST IN DOING SO.

  13. SPEAK AGAINST GOD/CHRIST AND THE BIBLE BACK THEN AND YOU WERE FINISH. YOU WOULD BE SHUN FROM EVERYTHING. NOBODY WOULD BE SEEN WITH YOU. YOU WOULD BE FIRED FROM YOUR JOB AND NEVER INVITED TO ANY FUNCTIONS, YOU WERE COMPLETELY BAND. THE ATHEIST'S ARE PULLING ON YOUR LITTLE PECKER THERE. IF JEFFERSON WOULD HAVE SPOKEN THESE ANTI GOD, ANTI CHRISTIAN THINGS. NEWS OF IT WOULD HAVE HIT THE PAPER AND HE WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN ELECTED AS OUR THIRD PRESIDENT.
JEFFERSON MONUMENT – Along the frieze in the interior dome is a quotation from Jefferson: “I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.” THE LETTER HE IS READING CAME AFTER JEFFERSON'S DEATH AND IS A FABRICATED LIE. SATAN HAS GREAT POWER TO FABRICATE LIES THROUGH HER/HIS PEOPLE WORKING IN THE GOVERNMENT. WHAT THEY CLAIM HERE WAS COMPILED YEARS AFTER HIS DEATH WHICH IS ALL A LIE. HE WAS A GREAT BELIEVER IN GOD AND ATTENDED CHURCH EVERY SUNDAY. I HAVE A FRIEND WHO'S GREAT GREAT GRANDFATHER WAS BEST FRIENDS WITH THOMAS JEFFERSON AND SAT DOWN IN CHURCH EVERY SUNDAY NEXT TO HIM. THE JEFFERSON BIBLE IS BULLSHIT AND SO ARE THE ANTI-CHRISTIAN QUOTES. A FEW YEARS BACK I WATCHED A EPISODE OF COLUMBO CALLED "THE FORGOTTEN LADY". I HAVE SAID FOR YEARS THAT PROSTATE CANCER IS NOTHING MORE THAN INFECTIONS THEY INTERPRET AS CANCER TO MAKE MONEY. AS I WAS WATCHING THAT EPISODE OF "THE FORGOTTEN LADY" WHAT WAS SAID ABOUT THE PROSTATE, WAS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS TELLING PEOPLE FOR YEARS, THAT IT WAS AN INFECTION. I TAPED THE SHOW AND WATCHED IT SEVERAL TIMES ABSORBING WHAT WAS SAID IN THAT PART OF THE EPISODE. I KEPT REWINDING IT. LATER STRANGELY MY WIFE ERASES THE EPISODE. WHEN IT CAME ON A FEW MONTH LATER. ALL THE VITAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROSTATE WAS GONE AND EDITED, CHANGED. THAT IS WHEN I KNEW THAT THE CHRISTIAN GROUPS ARE RIGHT ABOUT THE DEVIL FABRICATING LIES AND PLANTING FALSE INFORMATION. I PREACH AGAINST THE DEVIL IN EVERY WAY AND SATAN WATCHES ME LIKE A HAWK, AND AFTER GOD DIRECTED ME TO REINFORCED THE FACTS I LEARN FROM HIM IN THAT EPISODE OF COLUMBO. THE DEVIL WENT THROUGH GREAT LENGHTS TO KILL THE TRUTH LIKE IT DID WITH THE EPISIDE OF COLUMBO CALLED "THE FORGOTTEN LADY". I ALSO DEBATE THE ATHEISTS ABOUT EVOLUTION BEING A SCAM. THERE WAS A FACT ON AN EPISODE OF "SAFARI" OF THE NORTH AMERICAN LYNX AND THE SNOW SHOOT HARE. THAT ALSO GOT ERASED AND WHEN IT AIRED AGAIN. THE FACTS WERE ALSO REMOVED AND EDITED.

  14. Anyone know a good source to learn how our forefathers here in America defined religion and what constitutes a religion? Specifically when used by Thomas Jefferson or the First Amendment.

  15. Interesting video and yet Jefferson is misrepresented if he is presented as a secularist. The more modern concept of "secularist" suggests that religion has no place at all in the public sphere but clearly, the real Jefferson could not have believed that since he attended worship services in the Capitol. A number of other facts could be stated but I think Jefferson's recommendation that the new seal of the American Government include the Biblical account of the Israel in the wilderness is worthy of note.

  16. If you want to know just how ridiculous religion may be, just listen to Christopher Hitchens on You Tube, or read his books. One of his best books on religion is called "God is not great" "Religion poisons everything". You can even listen to an audio book version here at You Tube. Hitchens speaks very well. He was a giant of intellectuals.

  17. Freedom of ideas is what was important to Jefferson, not the power that some people thought of the presidency.

  18. so let me ask what agenda is being pushed more transgender gay leftist political indoctrination or religious indoctrination in public schools,, let me know the answer you come up with ???

  19. this i have learned is, the meaning of life is maintenance, this unlike almost everything else i can think of is not negotiable

  20. in the news in the groove and on the move: the reason they are saying jefferson was not a principal signer of the constitution is because, they, like jefferson are militant monkeys, this is how you should expect militant monkeys to act, and taking fragments of jeffersons grave marker for souvenirs is simply more proof they are monkeys, instead of stealing the marker as one piece like jefferson was so afraid of, the monkeys decide to steal it one piece at a time, God has no morals, what God does have though, is control of the resources, if you dont want the truth don't act like you are looking for it, this is the truth of how morals really work, if you are rewarded its good if punished its bad, dont believe me, ask that con artist preacher in texas, joel osteen or ask donald trump or ask God himself, have a nice day 😀

  21. It's a false belief that religions & science can co-exist without conflicts. Quote- Fyodor Dostoevsky  Brothers Karamazov

“So long as man remains free he strives for nothing so incessantly and so painfully as to find someone to worship. But man seeks to worship what is established beyond dispute, so that all men would agree at once to worship it. For these pitiful creatures are concerned not only to find what one or the other can worship, but to find community of worship is the chief misery of every man individually and of all humanity from the beginning of time. For the sake of common worship
they’ve slain each other with the sword. They have set up gods and challenged one another.”

Put away your gods and come and worship ours, or we will kill you and your gods! And so it will be to the end of the world, even when gods disappear from the earth; they will fall down before idols just the same.”

  22. I felt the same way many years ago, what’s the big deal? And now we are seeing the results of allowing these religious organizations trying to impose their beliefs and influencing laws for their religious agenda, it’s ridiculous and it needs to stop.

  23. Tom called it back then now its 2019 and we are neck deep in alligators who wear crosses and clutch at the flag!

  24. 2019 & Still haven't idea why here. Hopefully Evolve. Get alittle light in my soul. Get outa confusion.

  25. we go against laws that are meant for all people when we pander to the Christian religion as the only way to go. Jerry Falwell and the moral majority benefiting from the government for their Christian push. You cannot have a constitution or laws that work for all Americans unless you keep religion out of it or someone will always be seen as lesser individual when it comes to civic rights and that is wrong in the united States of America.

  26. I see the last gasp of a dying fish because the water-bearer has arrived to usher in the new age of Aquarius. This false priesthood of Rome and offshoots in America is a dying baby boom system that 21st Century folks can't relate to and need to replace.

I suspect the Aquarian religion will involve space aliens that only the priest can communicate with and are here to save us from certain destruction, the fools will flock to that show in droves.

Reason and Logic will never be the next religion, however, not enough drama and religion thrives on people wanting someone to tell them what to do, it's the comfort of not having to think for yourself.

BTW, the aliens want you to send me money, they know everything so better to comply.

  27. Thomas Jefferson said all this (and sometimes many other deeply stirring words about human dignity and equality and all that. You know, for instance, like we hold these truths to be SELF EVIDENT : that all men were created equal ) all while owning slaves at the same time. Utterly amazing ! Well I am sure glad he was so against human beings manipulating and controlling and taking advantage of and abusing each other! What hypocrisy ! So I guess politicians were just as into the concept of do what I say and not what I do,back then, as they are today.Guess there is nothing new under the sun after all.Looks like the founding fathers were probably so against King George and the English crown because they wanted to start a new country over here and set up their own oligarchy. They wanted to extort the "non land owners" and the "riff raff" instead of the British Crown doing it. Oh yeah, and I forgot, they knew that God gave them this land so it was ok to do a big time genocide on all the indian tribes. After all, they were heathens that didn't believe the bible, so it was fine. It was not a good thing to be on the wrong side of that manifest destiny thing !

  28. Without debating who believed what, some of what was meant to strengthen the Separation of Church and State , was done so to protect Protestantism from the spiritual assaults of the Vatican, Jesuits, false prophets and teachers, etc etc.
This is why I support keeping mandated Government Religion out of schools… To protect Protestantism, and the parents' rights to determine their children's spiritual education. To protect our Protestant faith from Conservatives, heathens, Atheists, Prosperity Religion, The Church of Rome, etc etc etc.

  29. Watch the Family on Netflix. You will be amazed at how much influence the government has by using religion as a tool. Not just a prayer breakfast.

  30. During the Anita Bryant era I watch Jerry Falwell tell his audience that gay people would just as soon kill them as look at them! I knew then that he had absolutely nothing to do with God! Quite the opposite! If they actually really believed in god then they would not be the evil beings that they are!
