Here’s how capitalism works. “[T]he tattering of the American Dream is causing individuals who expected more out of life to self-destruct in record numbers. In my mind, there is a connection between the skyrocketing suicides, drug addiction, and binge drinking we’re seeing across the country and the fact that Americans are struggling so much financially. As the divide between the 'haves' and 'have nots' grows ever wider, one could assume that 99% of the population feel that overcoming economic inequality is insurmountable. Many Americans are hopeless and resigned to the fact that they may never live the American Dream or become part of the 1%."

Here’s how capitalism works. "Unfettered or unregulated capitalism is about societies that cannibalize themselves. When capitalism is the dominant ideology … it turns everything into a commodity, including human beings and, of course, natural resources. It exploits these commodities until they are exhausted."

Here’s how capitalism works. "[L]ow-wage workers … dwell in a place that is neither free nor in any way democratic. When you enter the low-wage workplace — and many of the medium-wage workplaces as well — you check your civil liberties at the door, leave America and all it supposedly stands for behind, and learn to zip your lips for the duration of the shift. The consequences of this routine surrender go beyond the issues of wages and poverty. We can hardly pride ourselves on being the world's preeminent democracy, after all, if large numbers of citizens spend half their waking hours in what amounts, in plain terms, to a dictatorship."

Here’s how capitalism works. “The man who has millions will want everything he can lay his hands on and then raise his voice against the poor devil who wants ten cents more a day.”

Here’s how capitalism works. "When someone works for less pay than she can live on — when, for example, she goes hungry so that you can eat more cheaply and conveniently — then she has made a great sacrifice for you, she has made you a gift of some part of her abilities, her health, and her life. The 'working poor,' as they are approvingly termed, are in fact the major philanthropists of our society. They neglect their own children so that the children of others will be cared for; they live in substandard housing so that other homes will be shiny and perfect; they endure privation so that inflation will be low and stock prices high. To be a member of the working poor is to be an anonymous donor, a nameless benefactor, to everyone else."

Here’s how capitalism works. "The paradise of the rich is made out of the hell of the poor."
    — Victor Hugo,

Here’s how capitalism works. "Our nation has been hijacked by oligarchs, corporations, and a narrow, selfish, political, and economic elite, a small and privileged group that governs, and often steals, on behalf of moneyed interests. This elite, in the name of patriotism and democracy, in the name of all the values that were once part of the American system and defined the Protestant work ethic, has systematically destroyed our manufacturing sector, looted the treasury, corrupted our democracy, and trashed the financial system. During this plundering we remained passive, mesmerized by the enticing shadows on the wall, assured our tickets to success, prosperity, and happiness were waiting around the corner.”
― Chris Hedges, Empire of Illusion

  2. "Free market" with rigged bond rating agencies, "free market" crash the economy and get a taxpayer funded trillion dollar bailout and years later get a tax cut from the government and taxpayers, then take jobs the midwest and build the Chevy blazer in Mexico

  3. The financial crisis created by Wall Street and the banks in 2008 is why I stopped paying all of my debt quit my job and refuse to give more of my time to a crooked government or the broken system riding on the backs of normal broke ass people so the rich can get their money back. We are slaves until we say enough.

  4. My … My … How Time Flies … What Goes Around , Comes Around … Again … Again … Again & Again & Again … This Swindle Goes on & J Powell is trying to Spray Air Freshener on All of it … Not Funny …

  5. This is the doings of Phil Gramm and Bill Clinton (bi-partisan assclownery at the highest level). Never should have let investment banks and commercial banks dance together. Let the speculators speculate and let the commercial banks capitalize the real economy and never the twain shall meet.

  6. Great movie. But capitalism is not what caused this. The government stepping in and forcing the banks to approve the loans for low income low credit and problematic people that can’t pay back a loan because of “racism” and “prejudices” is what caused it. They were forced to give ppl loans that couldn’t pay them back so the market crashed

  7. Problem is, americans are not taught capitalism in highschool. Everybody thinks they should just go get a job after school then beg for a raise. Enterprising spirit needs to be reawaken. I tell kids never take a job for the money but for the education and training. Then go out and employ your services.

  8. This isn't the fault of capitalism. If it was up to capitalism these banks would have been allowed to fail. Its the fault of a corrupt government that allowed these banks to be saved by the tax payers. Banks would have never taken these risks if they new that they didn't have the safety net of the federal government.

  9. Waiting…..and positioned to buy what breaks. Too young to see what was shaping up the first time around. But lucky for me the same play has been run again. Watching people I know get in over their heads once more.

  10. And here we are, 2019 in a growing economy built on trillions more government debt than from 2008, stocks at highs from liquidity borrowed from the American people, YOUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN. Generations of work yet undone that must be done for free to pay back this mountain, mostly to themselves for what our parents and grandparents running Washington borrowed to give themselves a prosperous life at our expense. As long as the American people are addicted to the scraps of a "steady paycheck", they won't question what has been taken from them. There is no mass outrage, because as long as our fates are tied to our 401K's and IRA's, we are prisoners to those who now control the money, the Plutocrats and Kleptocrats paying lobbyists and politicians with one-hand-washes-the-other careers and play-the-game bonuses taken from other people's kids' futures. But hey we're at least better off here than in any other country in the world right? FREEDUMB. Make America Broke Some More doesn't sound as great as the other acronym.

  11. When the guys that steal all of the wealth for themselves wear fatigues, carry machine guns and quote Marx, and ensure nobody can ever get it back, well that's "socialism" and that's good.
