Sonido Musica Summer Camp at The Community Music School | Connecting Point | Sept. 5, 2019

>>>IN 2012, THE COMMUNITY MUSIC
SCHOOL OF SPRINGFIELD AND THE SPRINGFIELD PUBLIC SCHOOLS
PARTNERED TOGETHER TO CREATE THE INNOVATIVE MUSIC PROGRAM, SONIDO
MUSICA, AFTER REALIZING THE NEED FOR ARTS EDUCATION IN THE
IS SCHOOLS. THE PROGRAM FIRST PILOTED IN
THREE SCHOOLS WITH 60 STUDENTS AND TODAY THEY SERVE OVER 1,000
STUDENTS WEEKLY ENGAGING THEM IN MUSIC LESSONS ON THE INSTRUMENT
OF THEIR CHOICE. “CONNECTING POINT’S” ZYDALIS
BAUER JOINED THEM AT THE COMMUNITY MUSIC SCHOOL OF
SPRINGFIELD FOR THEIR SUMMER CAMP WEEK TO LEARN MORE. [ MUSIC PLAYING ]
>>MUSIC LIVES IN EVERYONE’S CULTURE. LIVES IN EVERYONE’S HEART.>>STUDENTS AT THE COMMUNITY
MUSIC SCHOOL IN SPRINGFIELD ARE BUSY AT CAMP PREPARING FOR A
CONCERT THEY WILL BE PUTTING ON FOR THEIR FRIENDS AND FAMILY.>>GOING TO PLAY A CHA, CHA, CHA
FROM CUBA. WE ARE PLAYING AN AFRO, A
LITTLE-KNOWN RHYTHM FROM NEW YORK. WE WILL PLAY A MERENGUE FROM
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC AND FINISH WITH MAMBO MUNDO, OUR THEME
SONG.>>THIS WEEK LONG MUSIC
INTENSIVE SUMMER CAMP IS PART OF SONIDO MUSICA, AN INNOVATIVE
PARTNERSHIP THAT BEGAN SIX YEARS AGO BETWEEN THE CITY’S PUBLIC
SCHOOLS AND THE COMMUNITY MUSIC SCHOOL IN SPRINGFIELD AS A WAY
TO BRING BACK MUSIC PROGRAMS INTO THE CURRICULUM. THE PROGRAM RUNS THROUGH THE
SCHOOL YEAR AND OFFERS WEEKLY HOUR LONG SESSIONS IN THE
INSTRUMENT OF THEIR CHOICE AND IN THE SUMMER THEY CAN ATTEND
THE CAMP AT THE SONIDO MUSICA MUSIC SCHOOL FOR FREE.>>I THINK THE SONIDO MUSICA IS
ONE OF THE MOST REMARK BLG JOURNEYS I HAVE BEEN ON
PERSONALLY BECAUSE IT KEEPS GROWING.>>WE STARTED OFF WITH THREE
SCHOOLS AND FIGURED IF WE COULD COME UP WITH A REALLY GOOD
TEACHING ARTIST WHO HAD EXPERIENCE IN PROGRAMMING FOR
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC, WE WOULD BE ABLE TO OFFER PRINCIPALS THE
IDEA OF THIS IS WHAT A MUSIC PROGRAM MIGHT BE ABLE TO OFFER
YOUR STUDENTS.>>SINCE THE PARTNERSHIP FIRST
BEGAN, SONIDO MUSICA INCREASED OUTREACH AND BY DOING SO HAS
BEEN ABLE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF MORE STUDENTS. EVEN HAVING A POSITIVE EFFECT ON
THE DROPOUT RATE FOR SPRINGFIELD SCHOOLS, ONE OF THE GOALS THE
PROGRAM SOUGHT OUT TO DO.>>WE STARTED WITH 60 STUDENTS
AND I WAS THE ONLY INSTRUCTOR FOR VIOLIN AND CELLO, NOW WE ARE
30 SITES AND OVER 900 KIDS.>>THEY WERE EXCITED TO COME TO
SCHOOL ESPECIALLY THE DAYS SONIDO MUSICA WAS THERE. OUR TRENDS ARE SHOWING THE
STUDENTS IN SONIDO MUSICA HAVE A LOWER DROPOUT RATE COMPARED TO
THOSE NOT PARTICIPATING IN THE PROGRAM.>>BACK AT THE CAMP, STUDENTS
CAN USE THIS WEEK TO TRY OUT NEW INSTRUMENTS AND EXPLORE
DIFFERENT GENRES OF MUSIC. THEY MAY RUN INTO CHALLENGES
ALONG THE WAY, THEY LOOK FORWARD TO BEING ABLE TO SUPPORT ONE
ANOTHER AND GROW AS MUSICIANS AND INDIVIDUALS TOGETHER.>>HONESTLY, THIS PROGRAM MEANS
A LOT TO ME. I HAVE BEEN DOING THIS SINCE
SIXTH GRADE AND I’M GOING ON TO 11th GRADE NOW. YOU’RE LIKE PART OF A FAMILY.>>MY FAVORITE PART ABOUT THIS
PROGRAM IS YOU GET TO NOT ONLY LEARN, BUT YOU GET TO HELP OTHER
KIDS WHO THEY MIGHT BE IN NEED. IF THEY ARE, YOU KNOW, JUST
STARTING OUT FOR THE FIRST TIME, YOU CAN REALLY HELP THEM AND
MENTOR THEM.>>I WAS KIND OF SHY WHEN I WAS
YOUNGER BEFORE I CAME. AND THEN I KIND OF SPROUTED WHEN
I CAME HERE AND I GOT TO PLAY A LOT OF INSTRUMENTS AND HAVE FUN.>>MUSIC LESSONS AREN’T THE ONLY
TYPE OF LESSONS STUDENTS ARE LEARNING WITH SONIDO MUSICA,
THEY ARE GAINING VALUABLE LIFE LESSONS ALONG THE WAY.>>IT GIVES THEM THAT
SELF-CONFIDENCE TO TRY TO DO THINGS THEY MAY HAVE THOUGHT WAS
IMPOSSIBLE. YOU KNOW, JUST GETTING THE SOUND
OUT OF A SAXOPHONE CAN BE A CHALLENGE. WHEN THEY CAN ACTUALLY PLAY
NOTES, MELODIES AND YOU LOOK AT THEIR FACES WHEN THEY GET IT.>>SO YOU’RE LEARNING HOW TO BE
WITH OTHER PEOPLE. YOU ARE LEARNING HOW TO GET
INSTRUCTION AND TAKE THAT INSTRUCTION AND BUILD OFF OF IT. THOSE ARE ALL THE FOUNDATIONAL
SKILLS THAT ALL OF US NEED TO BE ABLE TO PUSH UP AGAINST HARD
THINGS AND NOT GIVE UP.>>AS SCHOOL BEGINS, SONIDO
MUSICA HAS ONE THING TO CELEBRATE. THE SPRINGFIELD SCHOOL COMMITTEE
RECENTLY VOTED TO HAVE ART AND MUSIC IN ALL THE SCHOOLS IN THE
DISTRICT. SOMETHING THAT SONIDO MUSICA HAD
BEEN ADVOCATING FOR SINCE THE PROGRAM FIRST BEGAN.>>MUSIC AND THE ARTS BUILD ON
CREATIVITY, BUT THEY ALSO BUILD ON HOPE. AND THAT IS AN ESSENTIAL
INGREDIENT FOR HUMAN INTERACTIONS AND HUMAN
EXISTENCE. [ APPLAUSE ]
