New east Austin mosaic, made by group of neighbors, reflects community’s changing story


PRESIDEN’S 2-AMANDA:THER’S A NEW PIECE OF PUBLIC ART IN EAST AUSTIN. 2-JOHN:I’S A MOSAIC.. AND DOZENS OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS CREATED IT OVER THE COURSE OF THIS YEAR.THE ARTISTS WHO ORGANIZED THE PROJECT – TELL OUR CHRIS DAVIS – THEY HOPE I’S THE RYAH CHRISTENSEN: “FOR ME WHEN I LOOK AT THIS PIECE I THINK ABOUT HOW WE CREATE COMMUNITY.” EACH OF US HAS A DIFFERENT DESIGN, A DIFFERENT SHAPE.RYAH CHRISTENSEN: “AND THEN WE CREATE SOMETHING THAT WE DO SEE OURSELVES IN, BUT IS NEW AND DIFFERENT.”MOSAIC ARTIST RYAH CHRISTENSEN HAS LIVED IN THIS EAST AUSTIN NEIGHBORHOOD FOR TWO DECADES. SHE DESIGNED THIS PROJECT TO BRING HER NEIGHBORS TO THE SAME DRAWING BOARD.EMY LEVIEGE: “I’S VERY EMOTIONAL FOR ME TO SEE ALL THIS, AND VERY PROUD TO BE PART OF THIS COMMUNITY.”EMY LEVIEGE IS ONE OF MORE THAN A HUNDRED ONE OF MORE IS EMY LEVIEGE COMMUNITY.” EMY LEVIEGE IS ONE OF MORE THAN A HUNDRED PEOPLE WHO HAD A HAND IN THIS MOSAIC.OVER THE COURSE OF FOUR WORKSHOPS.. THEY DESIGNED AND MOLDED TILES INDIVIDUALLY.. THAT WORKED TOGETHER COLLECTIVELY.EMY LEVIEGE: “ART AND PAINT IS THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE. SO I’S REALLY WHAT I’S ABOUT, THE COMMUNITY AND THE NEIGHBORHOOD.”LIKE MUCH OF EAST AUSTIN.. THE NEIGHBORHOOD IS CHANGING FAST.RYAH SAYS, I’S PROBABLY NOT GOING TO STOP. BUT.. SOME NEW FACES JOINED WITH THE ESTABLISHED ONES FOR THIS PROJECT.RYAH CHRISTENSEN: “AND I THINK I’S HOPEFUL IN THAT SENSE, THAT DESPITE THE CHALLENGES THAT THIS NEIGHBORHOOD IS UNDERGOING, WE CAN HAVE A CONVERSATION.”A CONVERSATION TO SEE HOW OUR STORIES ALL FIT TOGETHER.A CONVERSATION SHE WANTS TO KEEP HAVING.RYAH CHRISTENSEN: “I HOPE TO DO MORE. LOTS MORE, YEAH.”CHRIS DAVIS KXAN NEWS. 2-JOHN:THAT NEIGHBORHOOD CENTER PROVIDES HEALTH AND SOCIAL SERVICES.. PLUS OTHER BASIC NEEDS LIKE FOOD.BUT THE CENTE’S MANAGER SAYS A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO LIVE AROUND IT DO’T KNOW I’S EVEN THERE. SHE HOPES THE ART PROJECT WILL HELP DRAW MORE PEOPLE IN FOR SERVICES. AMANDA:SERVICES. AMANDA:A KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN HELPED RAISE 8-THOUSAND DOLLARS TO PAY FOR IT.ON WEDNESDAY EVERYONE IS INVITED TO A CELEBRATION OF THE COMMUNITY MOSAIC.IT WILL BE HELD AT THE ROSEWOOD ZARAGOSA NEIGHBORHOOD WEBBERVILLE ROAD.
