MINUTE ELECTION RESULTS ON LOCAL 24 NEWS AT 10. ALL NEW AT FIVE — MEMBERS OF THE NEW CHICAGO COMMUNITY IN NORTH MEMPHIS ARE SUING THE CITY OF MEMPHIS AGAIN. THE GROUP WANTS 20 MILLION DOLLARS THIS TIME.. CLAIMING MEMPHIS IS TARGETING BLACK COMMUNITIES. ACTIVIST CARNITA ATWATER… HEADS THE GROUP CALLED “NEW CHICAGO COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP REVITALIZATION.” SHE SAYS THE CITY IS VIOLATING ITS CHARTER… AND LEADERS ARE ABUSING THEIR POWER BY ILLEGALLY USING FUNDING FOR HOUSING.. SHE’S BACKING UP HER CLAIM WITH A RECENT STUDY SHOWING POVERTY IN MEMPHIS IS GOING UP… AND SAYS MEMPHIS DOESN’T NEED MORE DEVELOPMENTS AND HOTELS.. WHAT IT DOES NEED.. ATWATER SAYS.. IS HOUSING. CARNITA ATWATER / EXEC. DIRECTOR, NEW CHICAGO COMMUNITY PARNERSHIP REVITALIZATION CDC: “I care about the senior citizens that six months ago were eating cat food in this community. MIFA and the other programs had ran out of food. I care about the homeless people – black, white, yellow, brown – that’s living under the underpass, and they’re taking their property and throwing them out. So what we should be doing is taking that money, the funding, and building adequate shelters for these people.” ATWATER SAYS THAT WHAT HAPPENED IN ORANGE MOUND – WTH DECLINING HOME PRICES – SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED. SHE WAS ALSO BEHIND THE LAST LAWSUIT AGAINST THE CITY… WHICH DELAYED A VOTE ON THE MEMPHIS 3- POINT-OH REVITALIZATION PLAN. NEW TONIGHT — TENNESSEANS MAY
