1. Imagine what would could have happened if he had a smart phone and WiFi with battery life to match his passion!… Freedom is a birth right and modern technology is the path… Let go

  2. One day I will disappear from this place I call home for a few years and come back a new refreshed man. It’s all I look forward to.

  3. Great song. Beautiful, deep, passionate. I could have been another Chris McCandless and died on the road…pretty easily. Took to the road in 1980, hitchhiked across and around the US, coast to coast. Hiked in national parks, slept in a box car, lived in a mission for hobos.

Was it free and free-ing? Absolutely. Was it dangerous. Absolutely. Almost got killed several times. Old time hippies used to pick me up, just to tell me how dangerous hitchhiking was.

Met guys who lived off the land, living on next to nothing. One guy was able to live on $300 a year. Had a rifle to shooting game. Bought some bullets, maybe a few supplies for a tent, etc. etc.

So, I was in that culture and around that culture.

If you go extreme enough, you are going to hit walls. And, yeah, you could easily wind up dead.

Having some sense of balance is really the way to go. I mean, you can have incredible experiences of nature and freedom, doing through hiking of the Applachian Trail or other major trails…and in the National Park System and on and on. But, you do have to read, study and physically train. You do have to know what you are doing and not engage some journey that is beyond your expertise. Or, you could wind up dead.

I was hiking in Glacier, without proper prep. Almost got killed by grizzlies. I did hiking in the Badlands, almost struck by two different rattlers. I mean…I was just stupid as a stone.

Hitchhiking, I was almost killed a bunch of times, with 2 very very close calls.

At the same time, we live our lives in cubicles and homes…these boxes that become our world view. It is important to crush that ignorance into dust. Freedom is a real thing.

But….and here's the real deal —- real freedom comes from inside. Comes from peace inside. And that immediately goes into a person spiritual search. If you really want real freedom, go to an actual Zen Buddhist monastery, talk with some of the priests and nuns. Maybe take a retreat there. Learn to meditate. Practice some Yoga. That is the direction where you will find real freedom.

The outer search is important too…and fun and free-ing. But ultimately, the real journey is inside.

In nature I was around bear, elk, an angry little bobcat, a bald eagle. So, yeah, I saw that stuff. I mean, it is fun and glorious. But animals are just animals. I mean…they are like your pets. Same or similar consciousness. Sweet, innocent, beautiful…incredibly athletic and all that. But there are zero deer in the wild, spending their lives helping the poor or writing a Beethoven symphony. They have limits.

But Gandhi is something else. Thich Nhat Hahn is something else. Or Thomas Merton, or Rumi and the Sufi poets. That is, ultimately where you can find real freedom.

Dance in me Thy dance of Infinity, by Paramhansa Yogananda

Thou lovest, O Mother Divine, to dance the dance of destruction.

Thou dost shatter fragile mortal flames in Thy war-dance of destruction, to show, smilingly, that our souls remain unbroken.

With Thy mercy Thou dost scale the hardened, mud-encrusted cover of delusions coated over us.

Since Thou lovest the dance of devastation, Mother, I have cremated all my desires, frailties, weaknesses and finiteness, forever and ever, and joined Thy dance of destruction of all evils.

O Mother, since now nothing more is left of my finiteness for Thee to destroy, dance in me Thy Dance of infinity and of love, instead.

  4. They played this song at my best friend's funeral. He was a big fan of the movie and he and McCandles had so much in common in ways of thinking about the system etc. May he rest in piece there, hope he's there Into the Wild!

  5. I quit my job and backpacked around south america for a year to realize that freedom is inside. I will be free if I want to be free, no matter where I am. So I came back being free.

  6. we watched the movie not long after it was released, on the ghat of varanasi. we were a bunch of western freaks sort of looking at our lives & many of the reasons of our choices on a big screen.
    mesmerizing & exhilarating… until he passes…
what have you done Chris… i'm so angry with you, you were never supposed to leave the physical world this way, betrayed by your connection with nature 🙁 so unfair moreover while our world desperately needs more souls.

  7. some people who call him fool to set himself out from society was undeniably the most foolish. Chris suffered an identity crisis, had been in a chain of people idealism the things he hate the most beside from his materialistic and selfish parents, the fact he realized he's illegitimate child from his long father family was the thing that hurt the most from the truth about his parent. Just imagine the magnificent child story you heard from the loveable figure turned to be a total fiction, that's what he struggled for. So by the time he got a chance to be free, he will do it.

note: it is a true story

  8. Saw the movie four years ago watched it one more time .Chris RIP broke my 💓. But I know I was on the road at 14. I get it. I took to many risks and I always went home untill I couldn't anymore.

  9. Fuck the shit out of that, is not illegal! Was actually probably 18 anyways. Who is brainwashing who? You teach your kids to fuck this guy and girl, and that guy and girl before they are 18, give them permission by dating, corrupt them, let them taste the waters first so to speak, then tell them they are wrong, Instead of teaching them to be with one person and marry until death. Who is corrupt again? Or I am the one who see's and hears and am wrong? Is why the bible says Hypocrites! You follow the world and ones own ways, teach them to fit in with society the same way you did so that you can fit in! Is what makes you correct for corrupting, to be right, to fit in, be liked, be accepted, is why you do it! Corrupt your children to be liked and accepted and to be right. How shameful. Cannot be the other way so don't tell me it is. Many will be like IDK WTF he just said, because you don't want to see it or hear!

  10. We all wish we had the balls that Chris. I mean,we all talk about disappearing but to actually do it and be free. That's cool. I think most people don't know where to start. At least that's my take.

  11. To any free and wondering spirit out there : read the epic of Gilgamesh . I give you the security from the elements but you will get the curse of greed , evil and betrayal … Society , not such a crazy breed after all

  12. I started my journey 8months ago and have met a lot of wonderful people out here in the world some bad ones to I was definitely inspired by the film that I seen shortly after it's release and 8months ago watched again well living in the wild now it's very scary at times didn't get much to eat today but I'm surviving the best I can . I tell my friends and relatives not to worry about me I'm doing just fine just couldn't take living in the real world any more. Alot happier with out money in my pocket, I guess I am a fool wish I could go back to a normal life but there is no normal life anymore for me , let me just say to you kid's out there that are thinking of doing this don't do it move back in with your parents or friend s it's rough out here!!😂😅 Well gotta keep moving or I be in trouble again good night stay safe, I try to do the same

  13. Love this movie, love the actor playing Chris, adore the soundtrack (this is why I watched the movie in the first place). I wish Crhris had been better educated about what can kill him in the wild, it would have been much better if the movie had a happy end…a smart, young person wasted for nothing.
