Comments made by Elder Oaks concern transgender community ahead of General Conference (5 p.m.)

DURING MARRIAGES AND BAPTISMS.. MEMBERS ARE EXCITED ABOUT THE POSSIBILITIES. GLEN MEANWHILE LEADERS IN THE LOCAL TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY SAY THEY’RE CONCERNED ABOUT THE WELL- BEING OF THEIR MEMBERS AHEAD OF CONFERENCE WEEKEND. THIS COMES AFTER REMARKS MADE BY ELDER DALLIN H OAKS — ON WEDNESDAY ABOUT GENDER. ABC 4’S ROSIE NGUYEN JOINS US IN THE STUDIO WITH MORE ON THE STATEMENT’S IMPACT. ROSIE? MEMBERS OF THE TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY TELL ME ELDER OAKS’ STATEMENT ERASES THEIR EXISTENCE AND SENDS THE MESSAGE THAT THEY DON’T HAVE A PLACE WITHIN THE CHURCH. THEY TELL ME EVERY TIME A STATEMENT OF GENDER IS MADE IN RELATION TO THE L-G-B-T-Q COMMUNITY … THEY SEE AN INCREASE IN PEOPLE REACHING OUT FOR HELP. IN A MEETING WITH CHURCH OFFICIALS WEDNESDAY, ELDER OAKS SAID, “THE INTENDED MEANING OF GENDER IN THE FAMILY PROCLAMATION … AND AS USED IN CHURCH STATEMENTS AND PUBLICATIONS SINCE THAT TIME … IS BIOLOGICAL SEX AT BIRTH.” HE GOES ON TO SAY … “FIRST … GOD CREATED MALE AND FEMALE … AND THAT THIS BINARY CREATION IS ESSENTIAL TO THE PLAN OF SALVATION.” SAMANTHA TAYLOR, AN L-D-S TRANSGENDER WOMAN, SAYS STATEMENTS LIKE THESE … HAVE A SEVERE IMPACT ON THE SOCIAL AND MENTAL WELL- BEING OF THE L-G-B-T-Q COMMUNITY. Samantha Taylor / Board Member, Utah LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce: “He knows the impact of his words, he knows what he says, he has been told these things are hurtful and that they lead to suicides and suicidal ideation and he has chosen to say it anyway.” LEADERS IN THE TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY SAY THEY’RE CONCERNED ABOUT ADDITIONAL STATEMENTS THAT COULD BE MADE THIS WEEKEND DURING GENERAL CONFERENCE. IF YOU EXPERIENCE A MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS, THERE IS HELP. WE’LL HAVE A LIST OF RESOURCES ON OUR WEBSITE AT ABC 4 DOT COM. GLEN, BACK TO YOU.

  1. I don'y understand why the trans, gay people want to be a member of a church that don't agree with how they want to live their lives. Go join another church. The LDS church will never change their policies.

  2. Samantha Taylor is a man!
No amount of hormones, surgery or affirmation from others will change that. Repent of this sin.
But the LDS church will yield to this perversion as they have with the murder of children.
They must try and save face at all costs!

  3. The transgender people complaining will never be happy, no matter what concessions are given to them. They are children of God, but that does not mean scripture should be changed because of their illness..

I pity them. They are lost.

  4. Do a quick search of Dr. John Money and see how his gender experiments turned out. I disagree with this confused individual and say that teaching transgender ideologies causes increased suicides obviously since suicide rates are higher amongst those people. We still love you but your wrong and confused.

  5. As a transgender myself and part of the LDS church it's hard to feel the love and support from our brothers and sisters but we are all loved by God. No matter what choices we make here on Earth (except murder and other harmful crimes) God will still love us. It says it in the Bible. But there is a fine line of where you should cross. Love people for who they are and not by what gender or color or race they are. We are all the same color on the inside, which is pink and blue.

  6. I just want to say, if you're a transgender individual…. not everyone thinks like these people commenting do.
I see your struggle and I keep it close to my heart. I will forever say that if there is a God and he made you, knows the hairs on your head then he made you and knows you are transgender. And loves you just the damn same.

I'm no longer LDS and I know this isn't my place, but if that man spoke for God, then somebody got the "All loving and all forgiving part wrong". You are an amazing, powerful being. You deserve to surround yourself with people who actually love you and actually support you. Not the fake love I see constantly throughout the LDS community. The fact you can keep your faith and continue to love your church is a testament of how strong you truly are.
