Chinese President Xi Jinping said he respects
Taiwan’s social system and lifestyle in a meeting with a former vice president of Taiwan
on Tuesday. The meeting between the Chinese president
and Taiwan’s former vice president Lien Chan, who is now the honorary chairman of Taiwan’s
Kuomintang Party, follows another round of government-level talks between the two countries
last week when they agreed to create a permanent communication body.
During the meeting on Tuesday, President Xi also said the two sides should foster a common
understanding of the One China principle, which says there can only be one state called
“China.” The former vice president echoed Xi’s remarks,…
saying cross-strait communications should be conducted under the One China principle.
